PIE CHAMBERS started her career in textiles when she was living in the North East of Scotland in 1974, studying with the well known cloth weaver DAVID RUSSELL GURNEY. She exhibited widely in that area and became known for her hand woven tweeds using the soft muted colours that the climate and environment demanded. She conducted many residential and weekly workshops in her studio during the summer months.

In 1986 she moved to mid Devon where she developed and expanded her skills into kilim weaving and, in 1989, after making her first visit to India, started to use bolder,brighter colours and designs inspired by her visit to the Sub Continent.

Since then she has moved more into the field of textile and cloth design and has the opportunity to work and study in the textile villages of Rajasthan and Gujarat. A fervent love affair with INDIGO and the designs and shapes encountered in the village workshops have channelled her skills into the direction of cloth design with hand block printing and resist dyeing. This was greatly encouraged by several discussions and correspondence with the late block printer and dyer, SUSAN BOSENCE.

Whilst the techniques are traditional, the designs are original – in a world where design has become over complicated and colours are a mass of chemical discordance PIE has made her statement by using simple bold designs and strong natural colours.

PIE now lives on the edge of the LONGLEAT Estate in Wiltshire near FROME which is becoming a centre for artists and craftspeople with several months of the year spent in INDIA where she leads several textile and craft study tours.
